So, five years ago, 2014, at age 60 I was a little dissatisfied at how I looked. Not the stud muffin I had hoped to be. Also, I thought I could just hit the track before a little two mile race and just kill it.
Well, I fell far short on both of these ideas, and further, my self-dissatisfaction reached new heights, (or lows) more appropriately. Just to be clear, I'm not advocating having feelings of low self esteem, or vanity about our appearance, I think we do this quite well all by ourselves. But I do believe most, if not all of us, think we can do much better in our lives in terms of weight and functionality. Back to my "story". After my realization of just how far off I was from my desired look and fitness level I kinda made a declaration to the universe that it was now or never for me and the now was infinitely more preferable. I came across an account online of a son whose father was scheduled for heart surgery. The son told his father to quit eating grains, the father did it and recovered, not needing heart surgery. Now I realize that this very well could have been fictitious, probably was, but to me it was calling me to quit the grains. In total naivety I went grain-less and also I must add that I added fats to my diet, (not trans fats) and started dropping weight. I also kept trying to run, very difficult, maybe 5 miles a week or less. I started at 215lbs and in approximately three months was down to 170. I was gratefully amazed at this result and kept learning why this happened, which lead to my course work in ancestral health and primal health and my certification as a health coach. Now, of course, there is a lot more to the story, but this is the basic outline. I have hover around 175 to 185 now four years later as I continue my experiment with food and lifestyle tweaks. Two more thoughts I would like to share; 1- one of the most common initial reactions that people have after experiencing the amazing transformation they go through is RAGE. That's right RAGE, because nobody told them about this way of eating, in fact they/we were and are told the exact opposite. That being the old, outdated, ineffective advise of whole grains and low fat. It doesn't work, obviously, worldwide obesity. 2- it's not your fault! You have been misinformed. You have been told it's your fault, you need to exercise more and eat less. BS You just have to eat real food, more healthy fats, and much less carbohydrates. And again, there is more to the story, but that's the basics. We all have slightly different goals and pasts, but we all share an amazing amount of nutritional similarity. I have been there and done that! My goal is to help prevent others from possibly the common "fate" of our time, which is the common diseases we see around us.
