This thanksgiving was very special. It signaled the start of my 4th year of running. Woohoo!
Various family members join me for the turkey trot every year on thanksgiving morning and then we go out for brunch and have our main gathering on the next day friday. But even more than my running, it signifies to me the success of my fitness journey which has as its cornerstone foundation the eliminating of grains and addition of the much maligned saturated fats. By the way, I just heard again on the radio Dr. Sanjay Gupta exhorting us to avoid saturated fats (like coconut oil) and include "heart healthy" whole grains. PUHLEEZ! If this worked we wouldn't have all the sickness worldwide and also the "keto dieters" wouldn't be in such awesome shape. (the keto diet emphasizes the importance of fats, making up the majority of the calories). So, the danger in my running and exercising is that people think thats how I lost weight and got "in shape". Its funny, my doctor also commented that my running sure is good for me, thats after I just began and couldn't run a 5k. I told him that actually it was because I ditched grains and sugars, (which are the same thing) but he really couldn't even hear it or concieve of it, because it's not taught in school and the myths continue about the dangers of fats and cholesterol. Disclaimer, I of am not a doctor. But,... did you know that cholesterol is needed for almost every metabolic function in your body? Every cell needs cholesterol, your brain definately needs cholesterol. Too bad the anti- cholesterol drugs called statins are so widely prescribed and so profitable for docs and drug companies, and they aren't very effective according to many Doctors. Some of the healthiest people have high cholesterol. Often at night I wake up in the "peaceful, sacred, or holy" middle of the night and give thanks as I lie there gently humming with life energy coursing through my veins, knowing that the peaceful hormone melatonin is coursing through my body, along with human growth hormone, testosterone, and other body rebuilding hormones, and my brain recalibrating itself. Awesome! So, if I at age 60 (4 years ago) can transform my life, weight wise from 215 to 170, from a couch potato to a primal fat burning beast, you can too! Easy Peezy Lemon Squeezy I have continued to learn and experiment with fitness ideas and practices, have earned a health coaching certification and am thrilled with the thought of helping others to this "higher ground" or "sacred ground" of primal health and fitness. Get a hold of me if you would like to get off the roller coaster of ill-health and indecision of what to do about it. This is what my friend John said to me one day when I asked him to be a part of my health coaching team.
John and I had been meeting occasionally to share our fitness life and other life stories. He is very fit, swimming almost daily and had competed in many tri and duathalons. I had shared with him one of my favorite books by Gary Taubes, "Why We Get Fat" (and what to do about it). He enjoyed it and promptly lost 15 lbs in a couple of weeks, just by kicking grains and cereals to the curb. Awesome, but not uncommon. Now, it should be noted right here, I didn't tell John what to do, nor did Gary Taubes, just suggested nutrition ideas that are based on historical, evolutionary facts and John was interested and enjoyed the benefits! So, I asked John to consider being a part of my health coaching team, so that he could share his story and help those who are interested in real health and real results without the hype of fake foods, pills, shakes, or number crunching or anything like that. And this is where he made the statement, " I don't want to tell anybody what to do". Well, neither do I and further, most people I know aren't interested in being told what to do. BUT.... let's take a look around and see who is telling who what to do and who is doing it. Aren't we being told what to do 24/7 by the "food industry" through their ubiquitous marketing campaign on radio, television, billboards, and supermarkets? Pepsi is supposedly great for us, donuts can't be beat for food, breakfast cereals are a definate necessity and we should be devouring sweets and candy bars multiple times per day. Also, fats like animal fats, avocados, coconut oil, and butter are very bad for us, thanks to a flawed study by Ancel Keyes way back in the 60's. This study was called the seven country study whereby he supposedly proved that fats and cholesterol cause heart disease. But this study is flawed because he collected data from 22 countries and his findings weren't conclusive to his convictions, so he "cooked" the books. Yet to this day we are inundated with this phobia of fats because of this self renewing myth. See? We really are being told what to do and what to eat and most of us are, unfortunely, listening, usually unconsciously. That is why we need health coaches to support and encourage those who are fed up (pun intended) with the sickness promoting main line foods to show the simple way out of this morass. We need to constantly be reminded that real food can help heal us! Again, we can take the "father of medicines" word for it "let thy food be thy medicine and let thy medicine be thy food". The "food" we are being told to eat is causing metabolic disease, diabetes, cancer, alzheimers, arthritis, and all the other "itises". If the main stream food worked we wouldn't be in this global health mess. Give me a call, I can help you. 402-525-5828 to your health, Rich Couchpotatoprimalfit changing the world one person at a time ,Well, maybe.
But I doubt it. My experience with pills, shakes, or any "fake foods" is that while you may actually get some benefit, in the long run you quit the program because of expense or just tired of the hassle. I have a friend who has seen my fitness journey and wanted me to help him just lose 10 to 15 lbs.. I spoke with him a little about changing the food he puts in his body, very basic stuff, but he wasn't willing to give it a go. So, I see him again and he informs me that he is about to try a pill that will enable him to lose weight effortlessly. I told him to go for it and it might work, prob not though. But I am happy that he is willing to try something to get his health back. But I'd much rather he take a different approach. The approach I'm referring to is training your body for life-long fitness and health. First of all "training" your body is a somewhat misleading term. Our bodies are super intelligent and accustomed to ensuring our survival. Our bodies aren't interested in our 5 yr plan or our plans even for next week, they are concerned about making sure all of our systems and functions are in balance, working properly. So, briefly, we can "train" our bodies by eating our ancestral foods and allowing our bodies to become fat burning engines instead of a constant need for sugars and other cheap carbs. By eating primally we allow our bodies to tap into their own fat stores( a huge resourse) instead of incessently craming ourselves full of crap carbs that just get locked away as fat and we can't utilize them. Again, our bodies will adjust and start running efficiently on this ancient and primal fuel that has allowed us to survive for so long as a species. Can you imagine our ancestors chasing down some wild game, even after a time of food shortage, and complaining that they need a coke or sandwich? It didn't happen, they were efficient fat burners. It's really hard to imagine that life-long health is just one meal away, every day. It's almost like fiction to someone who hasn't tried it, but to those who have adopted a primal/paleo lifestyle, it's magic and it truly works. All we have to do is to try it. Just like Hippocrates said in 400 b c "Let thy food be thy medicine, and let thy medicine be thy food". And so my friend, by all means keep on experimenting with health ideas, but if you want life-long fitness and to decrease your chances of getting all the metabolic diseases that our standard american diet predispose us to; give me a call and I can help coach you to life-long primal fitness! 402-525-5828 in health, Rich couchpotatoprimalfit@gmail.com changing the world one person at a time |
