So, is it immoral to eat sugar or what?
Of course not! But, we do eat lots of the tasty stuff. Also we get it in surprising places. If we look at some of the ingredients in the packaged foods we eat we see that high fructose corn syrup is in there. Also, the breakfast cereals we eat, usually with sugar, just turns to sugar in our bodies very quickly. All the grains we eat turn to sugar quickly also. So, there's nothing "wrong" with sugar, it's just so prevelent. Our bodies take care of us as usual by secreting the hormone insulin which stores the sugars in our blood as glycogen in our liver and skeletal muscles. We then use this glycogen as back up energy, for workouts and emergencies. When our glycogen stores are full (most of our stores are full because of lack of consistent movement and exertion) insulin stores this sugar as fat. Now our " counter" hormone to insulin is glucagon and this hormone releases the fats stored in our cells into the blood stream for our use as energy. I need to reiterate the fact that we are evolved to be fat burners. Can you imagine our ancestors running down a beast but having to stop for a donut? Or the days when food was scarse? They didn't depend on instant cheap carbs, they didn't have them. But I digress, back to glucagon. Glucagon releases this stored fat into our bloodstream for use when needed and this fat energy is a very effective and clean burning fuel. The problem though is that when high levels of insulin are present our glucagon can't work, so we are in a fat storage mode instead of fat burning. This of course is just a brief overview but I think important to mention because with decades of eating the standard american diet (s a d) we become insulin resistant, our cells become almost immune to insulins influence and so we produce even more insulin, making fat burning very difficult. I want to mention just two more ideas. One is that not only do we love sugar, so does cancer, cancer cells thrive on glucose. The other quick mention is that insulin resistance precedes diabetes and now alzhiemers disease is being referred to as type 3 diabetes. So, it really behoves us to adapt a primal lifestyle to reclaim our birthrite as amazing human mammals, fat burning beasts! Eat primally, sleep primally, play and move primally, enjoy the sun, enjoy your LIFE that you have inherited from you survivor ancestors.
